Oasis Hire NYC Street Musicians To Promote Next Record

September 29th, 2008     Industry News   No Comments »

Oasis’ new album Dig Out Your Soul doesn’t hits stores until October 7, but the British rock band agreed to give NYC locals and visitors a preview of three unreleased tracks via the instruments and voices of nearly 20 MUNY (Music Under New York) performers—who would eventually filter out to MTA subway platforms and streets throughout the City to perform the never-before-heard songs for passers-by, including many hardcore Oasis fans who were eager to hear the new tunes. The musicians gathered, practiced the tunes according to their diverse styles and eventually played for Oasis members, who swayed and clapped as the local NYC musicians jammed away.

I guess Oasis has to outsource playing live since Noel Gallagher’s on stage assault at a Toronto show.

KFC Partners with Guitar Hero

September 29th, 2008     Industry News   No Comments »

KFC is partnering with Activision to help promote next month’s release of the “Guitar Hero World Tour” music video game with a host of promos.

People can register for a sweepstakes starting Oct. 26, for a chance to win a plasma TV, sound system, furniture, refreshment center, gaming consoles and up to 25 games.

In-store, customers who buy a 32-ounce beverage will receive a limited edition “Guitar Hero”collector’s cup and have a shot at winning other prizes.

The fast food chain is also working with Activision on a separate promotion that will give customers access to secret cheat codes to unlock special features within “Guitar Hero World Tour.” But for now, KFC is keeping mum on the details.

The promotion also includes a product placement deal in which KFC will be featured in the video game with branded cameos.

“KFC and “Guitar Hero” share a fan base that celebrates good music and great food,” Javier Benito, executive vice president of marketing and food innovation for KFC, said in a statement. “We’re confident chicken lovers and gaming enthusiasts will come together to enjoy our breakthrough in-game integration and amazing giveaways.”

“Guitar Hero,” which is published by RedOctane, uses a guitar-shaped controller to simulate the playing of music. The latest game features a redesigned guitar controller, a electronic drum kit controller and a microphone, as well as a Music Studio music creator that will let players compose, record, edit and share their tunes. Players will also be able to share their recordings with their friends online through GHTunes, where other gamers can download and play music.

TV spots and PR efforts will support the campaign. Weber Shandwick is handling the PR and DraftFCB will oversee advertising for the campaign’s launch. Mediaedge:cia, KFC’s media agency of record is in charge of the media surrounding the partnership.

Activision’s customer service department will now have to field complaints about pieces of chicken stuck in the GH guitars.

Music Review: TV on the Radio - Dear Science

September 22nd, 2008     Music News   No Comments »

Dear Science, TV on the Radio’s follow-up to 2006’s Return to Cookie Mountain– a dense and textural album with an optimistic core– is catchier, but thornier than its predecessor. Musically, it’s an instant grabber: Handclaps crack like fireworks. TVOTR’s horns, courtesy of the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, sound punchier and brighter than ever before. Vocalists Tunde Adebimpe and guitarist/singer Kyp Malone thrive as dual frontmen: They’re sexy when they’re angry, and even sexier when they’re not. And David Sitek’s production is shiny and urgent, while his harsher synths and doo-dads hang back like a commentary track.
